Financial anxiety lies to you
When you're anxious about money, your brain jumps to the worst scenario: homeless, hungry, no help available. But reality is almost always softer than the panic suggests. You have more options than you can see from inside the anxiety.
Knowing your financial floor isn't pessimism. It's power.
Three backup plans
Your real monthly minimum is almost always lower than you think. Knowing the number reduces anxiety immediately.
- List only non-negotiable expenses: housing, food, utilities, transport — nothing else
- For each category, find the cheapest viable option — not ideal, just acceptable
- List every subscription and recurring charge you could cancel in 5 minutes
- Write down the final number: this is what you need in your worst month — now find its source
Several income sources can be activated quickly — without long-term commitments.
- Sell something: electronics, clothes, furniture, equipment — marketplace apps make this fast
- Offer a service to your network: moving help, tech support, pet sitting, tutoring
- Sign up for gig platforms: delivery, TaskRabbit, care.com — income within 3–5 days
- Think about who owes you money — it might be time to follow up
Most people don't know what they're entitled to — or are too ashamed to ask. Both are fixable.
- Check eligibility for unemployment benefits — the process is simpler than most people think
- Look into utility assistance, food banks, and local emergency funds — these exist and are used by working people
- Call your lenders if you have debt — payment deferments and hardship programs are real and available
- Tell someone you trust what's happening — people who care about you want to help, but they need to know
